Why Story
Bernadette Maldonado
My Art story began as an adventure as it begins at birth. See I was adopted. I was born in an orphanage. I have always been told that I was a “gift” to my parents, so I grew up with the knowledge of my adoption, none of that was a surprise. I only knew two things about my birth mother. I knew that she was 14 years old and that she was “artistic”. That was all the information on the paperwork given to my parents. Having that little piece of information, I felt a tiny connection to the creativeness within me.
I found “soil” in color in my teen years when I was molested. My parents did their best to help me find my way, but it was really art that helped me most. At 19 I married a sailor and moved far away. Their Art found me. I became a Ceramic teacher. I had two boys and learned more about pottery, loving art even more.
I missed New Mexico, the culture, the art, but most of all my family, so I moved my boys’ home as a single foolish 23-year-old girl. I turned to my art. I began to do arts and crafts festivals. I found a touch of freedom for the first time in my married life. I took my children with me to all the festivals. I found my voice in my art. Eventually I began promoting arts and crafts festivals myself as well as being in them. My kids and I were rarely home. A hard home life, a great art life, I found freedom from domestic violence…
Three years later…My adventure continues… my girlfriends said my man “picker” was broken. They enrolled me in EHarmony and I met my love… yes my love story finally happened and I got my happily ever after! I moved from Albuquerque to Las Vegas, New Mexico, I went to pursue my education to become an art teacher. I remember the beauty and simplicity of it through the children’s eyes. I realize that art is for everyone and that art is in everything and that I can show these kids how they don’t have to be artists to be able to create art. I am loving life; I am loving the ability to show them that there is no such thing as “ugly art”. I make that our class motto. If you make a mistake, you can always make it into something else. We do not call it a mistake but a happy accident instead. I feel like I am changing minds. I decided to enroll in the MFA program in the Academy of Art University in San Francisco so that I can learn more about how to be a more well-rounded artist. I have never worked so hard in my life! Everyone is proud of me.
Then my world is rocked again… I had a stroke…
We decided, my husband and I together, that I must quit my job and find a new, less stressful way make a living. I am now in my last year of my Thesis program at the Academy of Art University, set to graduate in May 2021. I am turning to my Art once again. I started selling masks at the beginning of the pandemic on Etsy. I make horsehair pottery, oil paintings, I teach acrylic, oils, and watercolor classes online. I am also writing a blog. I am finding a way.
Turns out Art is finding my way because when my adventure began so many years ago in that orphanage, I was never meant to just be empty, because art is a compliment to an empty space, corner, wall, or table in someone’s home.
Since Art was the only word, I was given to tell me anything about my past, Art fills a void still today to help heal a pain. Without art in my life, I do not think I would be here at all…
A Spiritual healing through Art and Focus!
I know that painting can be challenging but once you understand the fundamentals, it unlocks new creative heights. I will show you the tools and techniques of painting through my step-by-step classes. I would love to help you get your ideas from your head to the canvas! I have been an Art teacher for many years so whether you’re picking up a brush for the first time or you have years of experience I would love to give you new skills and insights by teaching you painting! If you would like to hone your painting skills it can include any media including oils, acrylic, or even watercolor painting or maybe even oil pastel. I am familiar working with all those mediums. As an art teacher I like to use various painting methods, that makes it so much fun! I can teach you from a photo of your choosing or we can start from scratch. The choice is yours! I am classically trained with my MFA, but I leave the style up to my students, abstract, classic or surprise! Let us get creative together!
